I Need Help Configuring My Web Browser.

What is a web browser anyway? It is simply the program you use to surf the internet and Internet Explorer and FireFox are the only 2 web browsers to use for your online course. Browsers like AOL, EarthLink, Netscape, Safari, etc. will not work properly with your course. If you have FireFox, click here to learn how to configure it. If you have Internet Explorer, read on.

If you would prefer to watch a video on how it's done turn your speakers up and click on either configure Internet Explorer or configure FireFox.

How to setup Internet Explorer 6 or 7 for your course:

To be able to log into and take your Distance Education course, your security settings in Internet Explorer must be set no higher than Internet- medium high, and your privacy settings no higher than medium. If you normally keep these settings higher, they can be returned to your preference after you finish your course.

Open Internet Explorer and if you don't see a menu, you probably have Internet Explorer 7.

To access the menu, click on the Tools button and choose Internet Options.

Click on the "Security" tab at the top of the window and make sure Internet is selected. Set the Security Level to Medium-High for IE7 and Medium for IE6.

(this the Default Level setting for Internet Explorer.)

Windows Vista users - Uncheck the box labelled Enable Protected Mode. I had to do this before it would let me install Shockwave and QuickTime.

I've also had a student tell me she kept getting a "cookie" error when trying to log in until she turned off Internet Protected Mode.

Now click on the "Privacy" tab at the top of the window and adjust the control to a level no higher than Medium.

Also, while here, make sure the Block pop-ups check box is NOT checked.

Note to advanced users: You can click on the Sights button and add the following sites and then click the Allow button to allow cookies from our wesites. The same thing can be done for the Settings button to allow selective popups.

Hint - you can copy and paste these addresses from this page into Internet Explorer

Now click on the "Advanced" tab at the top of the window and check both "Disable script debugging" options and uncheck "Display a notification about every script error".

Click on the Apply button and on the OK button to save your settings.

For you to be able to log into your course your computer must be configured to accept cookies from our websites.

If your computer has any added security software, like a third -party internet security suite, that controlls cookies, then that software's cookie control needs to be off while you're taking your course, or it needs to be set to allow cookies from the following 3 websites:

How to setup FireFox 3 for Distance Education courses.

Firefox is available here, is supported for the Distance Education courses and it will work for both PC and Macintosh/Apple computers.

Open FireFox and click on Tools in the menu and then choose Options. Under the Main tab make sure FF checks to see that it is the default browser on startup. Next, click on the Content tab.

Either turn off the popup blocker by unchecking it, or click on the Exceptions button and add the following as allowed:

http://www.usa.edu/
http://de.usa.edu/
http://http://www.easehost.net/usa/4-5/
http://208.109.119.160/
http://usa-stream.com/

Hint - You can copy and paste the above lines into FireFox individually.

Make sure that Enable Java and Enable Javascript are both checked.

Click on the Privacy tab and then on the Cookies sub-tab and check the "Accept cookies from sites" checkbox, "Accept third-party cookies" checkbox, and choose "until they expire from the Keep until dropdown list.

Check the box labelled "Always check to see if FireFox is the default browser on startup".
